Building a movement
Support for parents and families
What is it?
Drug Free Kids Canada is building a movement that encourages and supports parents and families to prevent and reduce the harms of problematic drug use by youth.
The vision
Drug Free Kids Canada’s vision is to ensure that all young people will be able to live their lives free of problematic substance use and addiction.
Stay informed
In today’s world, staying informed and engaged in our children’s lives is more critical than ever. The rise in mental health issues and substance use among young people underscores the need for proactive measures.
All the answers
No parent is expected to know everything about drugs and how their use can affect the lives of our children. That’s okay. Even if you feel you don’t have all the answers, just start the conversations from where you are.
Concerned
Concerned about your child’s use of substances? You’re not alone. Many other families have been through this – they have faced or are facing similar challenges. It’s important to get the help you need – when you need it.
Support Hub
Care representatives can address your concerns, guide you to helpful resources, and refer you to Mental Health Professionals who can provide counselling support for you and your child – together or individually.

Educate, engage & empower
Drug Free Kids Canada is here to educate, empower and engage with information,
resources, and tools that can support you and your child.
Communication
It’s always important to communicate with your family – As parents, grandparents, guardians or trusted adults, having open conversations early on in a child’s life can help to build their trust, confidence, and resilience as they grow. Discussing together helps create a climate in which your child feels free and comfortable to talk with you about what’s happening in their lives and can make it easier to talk together about the bigger issues, like substance use.
Resources
Discover comprehensive resources to enhance your knowledge about drugs, intervention and treatment, enabling you to engage in informed and impactful conversations about safety with your children. Drug Free Kids Canada offers detailed resources, aimed at assisting parents and families in comprehending the reasons behind a child’s potential turn to drugs or alcohol. These resources provide guidance on how to effectively communicate with your child, recognize warning signs, and more.
Protect your kids
Introducing substance use into your family’s safety conversations as your children grow can protect your kids from the negative impacts of drug use, strengthen the connections between you, make it easier for them to talk about their own concerns with you, and help set them up for success as they navigate through the teen years and into adulthood. Your conversations might not be perfect — that’s okay. The fact that you are talking with your kids about these issues is important.
